My First Trip to the Lumber Yard Jerry Karlovich
I remember the first time my Dad and I went to the Lumber Yard. That's what they called them back then, Lumber Yards and not Home Improvement Centers. Dad was purchasing the materials to build a two car garage behind our home. I was only six years old and Dad told me to stay put in the truck. I did. There was too many forklifts and men carrying heavy lumber for a little six year old kid to have to stay clear of. I remember that smell of fresh cut lumber. It has a sweet smell that obviously has a chemical reaction to the male testosterone hormone. It makes a man want to wear flannel plaid shirts, grow out their beards and work with power tools. It activates the male pleasure senses found high in the sinuses. It's terribly intoxicating that smell of fresh cut lumber. There's not very many small independently owned lumber yards around anymore. In my town we have several of those big box home improvement centers. If you were to venture back to the rear of the store there you will find the Wood Cutting Station, only to be accessed by trained technicians officially authorized to operate the equipment. Yeah right! They don't know who they're talking to here. The Wood Cutting Station is revered as sort of a religious alter. Sometimes I have the urge to knell and say a prayer. The Wood Cutting Station is not used very often but I can be in the Garden Center of the store and the music of a high RPM saw blade can be heard several hundred feet away. It's almost like the song of the Angels to my ears. I find myself forsaking the tomatoe cages and like a Zombie, I'm seeking out the source of the beautiful music where I can get a fix of that incredible scent of fresh cut lumber. I think Chanel ought to bottle that stuff as a man's cologne or maybe a room air freshener. Somebody get Johnson & Johnson on the phone!
