Green Building Principle #1
The Building Site
Green Building is
giving thought to the Building Site and not just
rubber-stamping a house plan on a lot. If the
site is a "Brownfield" site, we need to check
for contaminates or hazardous waste that was
left behind from the previous use of the land
and clean-up and dispose of the problem
properly.
We
need to orient the home in regards to prevailing
cooling winds including an orientation away from
the cold blast of Winter winds. If you plan to
live in Texas like I do, then special attention
needs to be considered to avoid unnecessary heat
gain. And Boy! It does get hot here in Texas. If
you plan to line in Minnesota, the plan is about
the opposite. You do want to plan you home for
heat gain in the winter months.
It is preventing debris
from being washed away and down the storm sewers
or having construction trash blowing in the
wind. Any debris that is recyclable needs to be
flattened and place in bins for recycling. Of
course, that sounds like something we should
have been doing anyway. We need to give thought
to the building site as to how rain water run
off is going to effect the immediate surrounding
neighborhood.
How about collecting the rain
water from the roof for irrigation during the
dry times? I believe that if we were to collect
rain water for our irrigation needs and flush
our toilets with grey water, then we wouldn't be
so concern about these severe droughts that are
happening with more occurrence. That's just my
opinion.
